Grand Krasnapolsky

Amsterdam, Netherlands

An Amsterdam landmark and exuding a great history, the hotel was purchased by NH hotels in 2014 to be it’s first 5star offering within the new ‘NH Collection’ brand. Studio Proof undertook a difficult brief, with a short programme, and many structural unknowns due to the historic 50+ individual buildings that make up this grand hotel.

A design was required to respond to both the historic character of the building, and the newly created brand. The building itself suffered from an enormous amount of columns, making it hard to navigate the public spaces, and much time was spent masterplanning to get an optimum result.

The design is a fusion of brand awareness, masterplanning, and a design blending 21st century sensibilities with gentle historic references. The new lobby lounge is pivotal to the new design, with the Grand Café and the Tailor Bar both opening onto it; giving a sense of possibility and excitement, and harking back to the hotel’s glamorous history in the ‘Belle Epoque’ and ‘Roaring Twenties’ periods.

Designs were also created for the extravagant ‘White Room’ fine dining restaurant (a listed heritage interior), headed by 3 Michelin star head chef Jacob Jan Boerma. The Tailor Bar (under the guidance of the World’s Best Female Bartender, Tess Posthumus) nestles in the heart of the building with it’s own cigar courtyard, and carries a warm vintage vibe.
